Class Outline

Week 1: Introduction – The Blessings of Plants in the Quran

In the first week, students will be introduced to the significance of plants and fruits in the Quran, exploring why Allah mentions them and the wisdom behind these references. They will reflect on the role of nature in Islam and how it serves as a sign of Allah ﷻ’s power, mercy, and provision. This session will also outline the course structure, setting the stage for a deeper exploration of specific Quranic plants in the weeks ahead.

Week 2: The Fig & The Olive – Sacred Symbols

The second week will focus on the fig and the olive, two plants highlighted in Surah At-Tin for their sacred and symbolic significance. Students will learn about their deep-rooted connection to Islamic teachings and their importance in the diets of prophets and past civilizations. Beyond their spiritual value, the session will also explore their numerous health benefits, demonstrating how these fruits are both a source of nourishment and a reflection of divine wisdom.

Week 3: Dates, Grapes & Pomegranates – Fruits of Jannah

In this lesson, students will explore the Quranic references to dates, grapes, and pomegranates—fruits described as among the delights of Jannah. They will learn about their historical importance, their role in prophetic traditions, and their incredible health benefits. Through this session, students will gain a deeper appreciation for these fruits, understanding how they serve as both a physical blessing and a reminder of Allah ﷻ’s abundant mercy.

Week 4: Cucumbers, Garlic, Lentils & Onions – Lessons from Bani Israel

This week, the focus will shift to cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions, as mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:61) in the story of Bani Israel. Through this narrative, students will reflect on the themes of gratitude, contentment, and the importance of appreciating Allah ﷻ’s blessings. They will discuss how these everyday foods carry significant lessons about reliance on Allah ﷻ  and the dangers of being ungrateful for His provisions.

Week 5: The Banana Tree & The Concept of Rizq

In this final week, students will examine the mention of the banana tree in Surah Al-Waqi’ah (56:29) and its connection to the broader concept of rizq (sustenance). They will reflect on how all provisions, whether abundant or scarce, come from Allah ﷻ  and how cultivating gratitude for these blessings leads to contentment and barakah in life. By the end of the course, students will have a renewed appreciation for Quranic plants, understanding their role not only in health and history but also in deepening their spiritual connection to Allah ﷻ’s creation.
